The Greensborough Project is a significant town centre revitalisation proposal which will set the future planning and development of the Greensborough Activity Centre. The centerpiece of this makeover will be an “iconic” state-of-of-art $33 Regional Aquatic and Leisure Centre and $21.4 civic centre and government office to be owned by Council. There will also be an active vibrant Town Square and pedestrian Street over two levels called Greensborough Walk.
The pool complex will feature a 50-metre indoor heated pool and a “lazy river” tube ride, toddler pools, gym, café, medical clinic, day spa and integrated health services. The project is looking at Greensborough’s environment, public spaces, public and private transport, parking, government, health and youth services, shopping and housing.
Place making, pedestrian access and employment opportunities are other central issues. Place making is the process of designing “liveable” places that are people-driven and work for everyone.
The Greensborough Project’s official vision is “To make Greensborough a people-friendly precinct, a township combining community, commercial and cultural interests with entertainment and leisure, founded on environmentally and economically sustainable principles.”
The project is being driven by Banyule City Council with a private consortium called Greensborough & Partners Pty Ltd. Broad community input is being sought at every stage and a Community Consultative Committee has provided valuable input from 11 volunteers representing business, residents and the community at large. A new town square, art spaces, civic offices and meeting spaces are other possible features being considered for this project.
The Greensborough Project is an ambitious strategy to rebuild Greensborough with a level of “big picture” vision and coordination between planners, developers, the community and all levels of government never seen before in Melbourne’s existing suburbs.
